QUESTIONS TAGS

1. The questions tag after “I am” is “are not I”

· I am late, are not i?

2. “Will you, won’t you, would you, can yiu, can not you, and could you” are used in questions tags after imperatives.

“Won’t you” is used to invite.

“Will you, would you, can you, and can not you” are used to tell people to do things.

· Do sit down, won’t you?

· Open the window, would you?

· Give me a hand, will you?

· Shut up, can not you?

3. After negative imperative, only “will you” can be used.

· Do not make noise, will you?

· Do not come late, will you?

4. “There” can be used as a subject in questions tags.

· There’s something wrong,is not there?

· There won’t be any trouble, will there?

5. Sentences containing negative words like “nothing”, “no body” are followed by positive. The pronoun “it” is used to avoid repeating “nothing”, and “they” is used to avoid repeating “nothing”, and “they” is used to avoid repeating “nobody”

· Nothing can stop him, can it?

· Nobody visited her, did they?

6. Sentences containing negative meaning like “rarely, never, hardly, no one and none”, use positive.

· They saw no one in the park, did they?

· He never sends you a letter, does he?

7. “Somebody, someone, everybody, and everyone are followed by tags with they”

· Somebody stole her money, didn’t they?

· Everybody has come, haven’t they?

8. Inviting someone by using “Let’s is followed by “shall we”?

· Let’s go now, shall we?

· Let’s have our dinner here, shall we?
